Sumac steak

Sumac Steak

This is quite possibly the simplest steak recipe you’ll ever make, but it’s incredibly tasty and wonderfully moreish for such little effort!  I’ve only ever tried this with rump steak, but I’m sure it would work with most any cut, even a minute steak if you’re on a budget! If you’re cooking for more people or for a barbecue, simply adjust the amounts accordingly.

Ingredients

  • 2 rump steaks
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of sumac
  • 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds

Method

Put the oil, sumac and sesame seeds into a bowl with a good bit of seasoning. Combine and then toss in your steaks and make sure they’ve got a good even coating.

Using a griddle pan on a high heat, cook your steaks to your preference.

Remove, wrap in some foil and rest for 5-10 minutes before cutting into strips at an angle.

That really is it!

Trivia

In 1970, archaeologists excavated an 11th century shipwreck off the coast of the Greek island of Rhodes. In its cargo they discovered a commercial quantity of sumac drupes (seeds) which they believe may have been used medicinally to cure a number of ailments, or used as a dye, or in cooking.
